Job Overview

The HPC Linux Systems Engineer position requires an individual with an active DOE Q Clearance or a DOD Top Secret Clearance that is convertible. This role necessitates onsite presence.


Team Responsibilities

The team is dedicated to supporting research and development initiatives. They are tasked with the design, deployment, optimization, monitoring, and tooling assistance across various clustered infrastructures for the research entities they collaborate with. Their support extends to clusters ranging from a few nodes to over 40,000 cores.


Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will collaborate with research organizations to foster research excellence and successful delivery. They will engage with other HPC and clustered computing teams to assist research programs in identifying optimal solutions. In this role, you will partner with the team to design, implement, and maintain systems for clients from inception through to decommissioning.

This position involves advocating for HPC and clustered computing services to researchers handling large datasets or developing code as part of their projects. You will be accountable for the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems. A strong inclination to explore new technologies and articulate their potential benefits to team members and research partners is essential.

The team emphasizes automation and monitoring solutions to reduce daily maintenance, and you should consistently seek opportunities to enhance system management practices and performance. As the primary subject matter experts for these systems, you will collaborate with technical points of contact for the supported programs to install and optimize various scientific toolsets.

We are looking for a collaborative and enthusiastic team member who values building trust and credibility, ultimately becoming a trusted advisor to research teams. The group optimizes workflows and monitoring solutions to leverage the 24/7 operations staff, significantly minimizing the need for after-hours support. A flexible work schedule is available, and communication is maintained through various collaboration tools.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience and education totaling 5 years.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with configuration management and automation tools such as Git, Jenkins, Ansible, or Puppet.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language, such as Bash or Python.
  • Experience in advanced troubleshooting and system administration of Linux Servers.
  • Experience in supporting large data systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Active DOE Q or DOD Top Secret Clearance required, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 7 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.
  • Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.
  • Experience with CentOS/RHEL 7+, CentOS/RHEL 8+, Ubuntu 18+.
  • Understanding of HPC platforms to assist users with job submissions and troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing systems with GPU/CUDA clusters for AI/ML or image processing.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis, and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
  • Familiarity with monitoring systems such as Grafana, CheckMK, Nagios, Zabbix, SolarWinds, or Ganglia.
  • Previous experience in a government, scientific, or highly technical environment.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the ability to create simple documentation web pages.
