Job Summary

The Emergency Department Paramedic position at the University of Virginia is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and experienced paramedic to join our team. As a key member of the Emergency Department care team, you will provide high-quality patient care and support the clinical care activities within the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient-centered care, focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs of patients.
  • Collaborate with the nursing and medical team to establish treatment goals and implement prescribed therapies within the scope of practice.
  • Communicate effectively to promote sharing of information throughout the continuum of care.
  • Participate in shared governance, adherence to standards of care, and professional development to promote leadership and clinical excellence.
  • Act as a patient advocate throughout the continuum of care, identifying clinical priorities and initiating action to improve patient outcomes.
  • Use medications, treatments, and protocols within the scope of practice, as defined by the Commonwealth of Virginia EMS Board, under the orders of a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Document patient care and treatment in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Provide and document patient re-assessment in the Electronic Medical Record, in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrate high-level teamwork with other members of the Emergency Department care team.
  • Support an environment of evidence-based practice, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and assist in the transport of critical patients throughout the organization.
  • Assist in trauma resuscitation, as assigned, including documentation.
  • Facilitate optimal patient flow through the Emergency Department and ensure the safety and security of all patients.
Requirements
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • 1 year of experience as a paramedic or 1 year of healthcare experience.
  • EMT-P in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification required.
Physical Demands

The job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequent travel, bending, and stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills are required, as well as attention to detail and the ability to write legibly. The ability to lift, push, and pull lbs is also necessary. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
