Job Overview

The Lead Culinary Specialist is a pivotal leadership position within the Prepared Foods department, dedicated to enhancing culinary standards and guest experiences on the Retail Floor. This role serves as the Venue Lead, responsible for overseeing and implementing operational procedures, merchandising guidelines, inventory management, menu execution, and promotional initiatives across various food service areas including chef's case, fresh pack, charcuterie, and more.

Culinary Leadership and Team Development

Champion culinary excellence by fostering a culture that prioritizes food quality and a Passion for Food ethos among all team members. Consistently convey and embody the vision and objectives of Whole Foods Market. Exhibit advanced knowledge of products and stay informed about industry trends and innovations. Cultivate a positive workplace environment characterized by teamwork, respect, and high morale. Maintain a thorough understanding of competitors and market trends. Mentor and motivate team members to achieve high performance and retention rates. Set service standards and represent the Prepared Foods department with pride.

Food Quality and Production Management

Oversee production processes within Prepared Foods to ensure the highest standards of quality, presentation, and food safety are consistently met. Implement and communicate operational procedures and merchandising standards for all culinary programs. Ensure the integrity of menu implementations and product displays. Monitor inventory levels and execute promotional strategies effectively. Foster strong communication and collaboration with store leadership and procurement teams. Take ownership of results, organizing work systematically and delegating tasks efficiently. Prioritize production tasks for the kitchen team. Maintain optimal conditions for food storage and compliance with signage standards. Oversee catering order fulfillment and coordinate culinary tasting events. Participate in inventory management as needed.

Guest Experience and Service Excellence

Lead by example in promoting exceptional hospitality to all guests. Act as a culinary ambassador, enhancing the in-store experience for customers. Stay attuned to customer needs and direct team members to ensure satisfaction.

Collaboration and Reporting

This position reports directly to the Prepared Foods Team Leader and collaborates closely with Store Leadership and Regional culinary teams. The Lead Culinary Specialist will build trust and lead a team of Leaders, Supervisors, and Service and Production Team Members.

Required Qualifications

A minimum of 18 months of professional experience in hospitality or kitchen environments, complemented by culinary training. Proven ability to teach and develop team members in a constructive manner. Organized and systematic work approach with strong prioritization and delegation skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster team dynamics and customer relationships. Genuine passion for food and commitment to food safety certification. Flexibility to work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Proficient in technology, including Microsoft Office. Reliable and punctual in all work commitments.

Working Environment

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, up to 8-10 hours. Physical tasks may include bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposure to various temperatures and cleaning chemicals. Capability to work in both wet and dry conditions. Willingness to travel for training or meetings as required.
