Position Overview

Join the City of Chesapeake as a Heavy Equipment Operator, where you will play a vital role in supporting municipal operations through the operation of specialized machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate various motorized equipment to transport materials, tools, and personnel to designated work sites while ensuring the removal of debris and other materials.
  • Collaborate with teams to repair water service lines, water mains, and perform concrete and asphalt tasks.
  • Utilize hand and power tools to assist in maintenance operations, including debris removal and excavation.
  • Support the operation of specialized vehicles such as tanker trucks, vacuum trucks, dump trucks, and backhoes.
  • Conduct operational tests and inspections of facility systems and components.
  • Inspect motorized equipment, perform minor maintenance, and report any malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including job-related logs, interpreting schedules, and providing information as needed.

Emergency Preparedness:

This position is classified as an Alpha role, requiring readiness to respond to emergency situations due to weather or operational needs. Availability during adverse weather conditions, mandatory standby duty, and overtime may be necessary.

Qualifications:

Educational Requirements: Completion of at least the 10th grade in high school is required. A high school diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of six months of relevant, full-time equivalent experience is required.

Licenses and Certifications: A valid driver's license is mandatory, along with a driving record that meets compliance standards. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, with specialized certifications based on departmental assignments.

Special Considerations: This role may involve exposure to confined spaces and requires flexibility in working hours to meet departmental needs and respond to city-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications: A Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred, along with a tanker endorsement to be obtained within 12 months of hire. Basic knowledge of pipe repair techniques and maintenance is advantageous.
