Role Overview

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various heavy machinery to load and unload vessels, trucks, trailers, and railcars.

Key Responsibilities
  • Arrive at your designated work station promptly and ready to begin your shift.
  • Conduct daily inspections of assigned equipment and report any maintenance needs to your supervisor.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating a range of heavy machinery, including those listed below.
  • Load trucks, trailers, and railcars according to picking tickets provided by Customer Service.
  • Communicate load completion details to Customer Service and confirm load information verbally.
  • Efficiently load and unload vessels, barges, trucks, trailers, and railcars.
  • Perform assigned duties at docks or other terminal areas as trained and required by operational needs.
  • Adhere to daily work instructions and complete any additional tasks assigned by your supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and care for all assigned equipment, tools, and uniforms.

  • Provide instructions to Material Handler I (non-disciplinary).
Expectations
  • Be flexible with your work schedule to accommodate incoming vessels and barges arriving at any time, 24/7, including weekends and holidays.
  • Successfully complete all required safety and terminal operations training.
  • Maintain a safe and incident-free work environment.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Utilize two-way radio communications effectively, respond to all radio checks, and answer radio summons promptly.
  • Work in an outdoor environment with exposure to various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain) or in buildings without climate control.
  • Be prepared for work environments that may involve mud, dirt, dust, and other airborne particles.
  • Establish and maintain positive customer relationships with drivers, treating them with respect.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of all drivers.
