About New Yorkers for Children:
Established in 1996, New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) is dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the welfare of children and families in New York City, particularly focusing on youth in foster care. NYFC funds, develops, and implements essential programs aimed at improving outcomes for youth within and transitioning out of the NYC child welfare system. Our initiatives encompass direct scholarship programs for older youth in foster care and innovative projects that explore effective practices within the NYC Child Welfare sector. Additionally, NYFC operates a youth-led, youth-elected Youth Advisory Board (YAB) made up of current and former foster care youth. Collaborating with the New York City's Administration for Children's Services (ACS) and a network of nonprofit foster care agencies, NYFC executes its programmatic efforts alongside over 32 community partners. Furthermore, NYFC manages more than 30 unique grants annually on behalf of ACS and oversees several large-scale, multi-year pilot programs delivered through community partners.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Administration, the AmeriCorps VISTA position is designed to enhance the operational capacity of New Yorkers For Children, enabling the organization to broaden its financial and programmatic initiatives to address critical community needs. Key responsibilities include managing and modernizing cash aid request programs, such as the Back-to-School Program and Emergency Grants for youth payments, leading Accounts Payable processing, and enhancing capacity in areas like payment management automation. The VISTA will also conduct research and provide formal recommendations regarding new technologies for the Finance department. NYFC operates in a hybrid model, ensuring that selected candidates have the necessary Internet access and equipment to engage with the NYFC database, with orientation and training provided virtually. Monthly transportation/Metro Cards will be supplied for commuting to the office, and reimbursement for cell phone usage (up to $75 per month) will be provided.
Member Responsibilities:
- Process and distribute requests for laptops and gift cards from youth.
- Research and implement efficient methods to digitize contacts for the Back-to-School Program.
- Maintain and enhance the electronic Inventory Tracker on a weekly basis.
- Organize applications alphabetically within respective files.
- Ensure documentation of ACS verification of Foster Care status is current.
- Collaborate with Finance department staff to lead updates to NYFC infrastructure.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of Accounts Payable, Vendor Set-Up and Maintenance, Emergency Grants for youth payments, vendor inquiries, Customer Set-Up and Maintenance, and invoice approval processes.
- Update and maintain vendor 1099 information in QuickBooks.
- Investigate frequently requested financial information and create banking reports for NYFC.
- Enhance Finance department capacity by researching automated software technologies.
- Retrieve Accounts Payable backups as needed to support annual audits.
- Living stipend.
- Childcare assistance, if eligible.

Permits engagement in other employment during off hours. Prohibits paid work outside of the sponsoring agency at any time.
