Position Overview

The Behavioral Support Specialist plays a crucial role in the formulation and execution of behavioral strategies and programs tailored for students requiring extensive behavioral assistance. This role operates under the supervision of the director of Intensive Behavior Support and is integral to the success of students across various educational levels.

Qualifications
Required qualifications include: A master's degree in education or a related behavioral health discipline. A minimum of three years of experience in working with children and adolescents facing developmental challenges, intellectual disabilities, mental health concerns, or significant behavioral needs. Certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and licensure as a behavior analyst in the State of Alaska within six months, or within one year with five years of relevant experience. Completion of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training within 30 days of employment. Current CPR and first aid certification. A valid Alaska driver's license. Preferred qualifications include: At least three years of effective experience in a school setting. Demonstrated exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Proven conflict resolution abilities. Capability to analyze data, create visual representations, and conduct functional behavior assessments (FBAs). Experience in developing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and training programs based on Behavioral Skills Training (BST).
Key Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the director of Intensive Behavior Supports and other coordinators. Engage with educators, counselors, and school psychologists to enhance instructional methods. Provide on-site coaching and modeling for staff assisting students with intensive behavioral needs. Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) in partnership with school psychologists. Formulate Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) in collaboration with educational staff. Design and deliver professional development sessions focused on behavior management and data collection techniques. Ensure the application of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in all interventions. Develop and implement data systems aligned with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Monitor and review the effectiveness of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) with educational teams. Create individualized behavioral training plans utilizing Behavioral Skills Training (BST). Establish procedural integrity checklists for BIP implementation. Gather feedback through social validity surveys to assess staff acceptance of intervention strategies. Delegate responsibilities related to data collection and BIP modeling to behavior strategists.
Work Environment
The role is conducted in a professional setting, engaging with a diverse array of individuals with varying roles and abilities. Regular exposure to a video display is expected, along with potential outdoor conditions. The noise level in the workplace is typically moderate, requiring effective communication and adaptability to dynamic situations.
