Objective:
OBJECTIVE

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic institution, invites applications for Quarterly Lecturer (non-tenure track) roles to deliver Spanish language courses throughout the academic year. Assignments will be tailored based on the applicant's qualifications and departmental needs.

The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching a maximum of two courses per quarter, totaling no more than four courses across the fall, winter, and spring quarters. Santa Clara University operates on a quarter system, with each quarter lasting 10 weeks, followed by an 11th week dedicated to final assessments. All classes are conducted in-person; however, should health conditions require, the instructor may be asked to transition part of the course to an online format. NOTE: This is an applicant POOL; positions are filled as necessary.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. or ABD in Spanish, Latin American Studies, Linguistics, Education with a Spanish focus, or a closely-related discipline preferred. Alternatively, candidates with a Master's degree and a minimum of 2 years of college-level teaching experience will be considered.
  • Proven excellence in teaching Spanish at the higher education level.

    Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of teaching Spanish courses for at least two years at the university level, in addition to TA experience.
  • Strong communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with communicative, proficiency-based language instruction, ACTFL World Readiness Standards, and educational technologies.
  • Expertise in Second Language Acquisition & Pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated inclusive teaching practices that support SCU's diversity and equity goals.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse group of undergraduate students.
RESPONSIBILITIES

TEACHING (100%)
Fulfill all teaching responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including but not limited to:
  • Teach no more than two courses per quarter and a total of four courses over three academic quarters (fall, winter, spring).
  • Attend all scheduled class meetings, prepared to demonstrate expertise in the subject matter and effective presentation skills;
  • Assign and assess coursework that aligns with course objectives, providing timely feedback to students;
  • Maintain regular office hours on campus;
  • Submit accurate and fair student grades to the Office of the Registrar by the specified deadline;
  • Conduct numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses;
  • Teach from an approved syllabus for University Core courses or collaborate with the Chair to create an appropriate syllabus for approval by the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee;
  • Collaborate with the Language Coordinator on course development, pedagogy, and assessment.
SERVICE (0%)
This role does not entail service responsibilities. Attendance at department meetings or activities is optional.
