PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this role is to ensure the safety of individuals and property, enforce laws at various levels, respond to both emergency and non-emergency situations, investigate criminal activities, and carry out specialized functions within designated units such as Road Patrol, Traffic, or Marine.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following responsibilities are typical for this position. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from this classification if the work is similar or related. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.

- Enforces relevant codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations to safeguard life and property, deter crime, and enhance security.

- Conducts patrols in assigned areas using various modes of transportation to identify and prevent criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects premises for security; responds to alarms; and maintains a visible presence in the community.

- Addresses calls from dispatchers, including domestic disputes, thefts, accidents, and other emergencies.

- Prevents crime; issues citations; apprehends and processes offenders; and conducts searches as necessary.

- Performs initial investigations of incidents; interviews involved parties; gathers evidence; secures crime scenes; and prepares detailed reports.

- Engages in rescue operations during emergencies, which may involve administering first aid or evacuating individuals from hazardous situations.

- Enforces traffic laws and conducts sobriety tests; utilizes speed detection equipment to uphold traffic regulations.

- Investigates traffic incidents; reconstructs accidents; and provides recommendations for safety improvements.

- Offers traffic control and security for various events and situations as required.

- Transports individuals as necessary and maintains accurate records of interactions.

- Participates in court proceedings; prepares evidence; and testifies as needed.

- Collaborates with other law enforcement and emergency personnel as required.

- Operates and maintains various law enforcement equipment and vehicles.

- Adheres to safety protocols and ensures a safe working environment.

- Completes necessary documentation and maintains accurate records of activities.

- Communicates effectively with the public and other agencies to provide assistance and resolve issues.

- Engages in community relations to promote safety and awareness.

- Attends training sessions to remain informed about departmental operations and legal updates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be State of Florida Certified or currently enrolled in a State of Florida Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Successful completion of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Physical Abilities Test within six months of application.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Operation of police boat may require obtaining a valid U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License.
  • Operation of police motorcycle may require obtaining a valid Florida driver's license with motorcycle endorsement.
