Park Maintenance Supervisor

The City of New Haven seeks a highly skilled and experienced Caretaker III to oversee the maintenance and repair of public parks and joint school playgrounds. This advanced position requires a strong understanding of groundskeeping, snow removal, and light equipment operation, as well as excellent leadership and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the maintenance and repair of park equipment and facilities, including inspecting equipment for damage, scheduling repairs, and ordering replacement parts.
- Lead the installation and maintenance of playground equipment, oversee the care of tennis courts, manage repairs to fence posts and backstops, and collaborate with trades employees on construction and repair projects.
- Supervise and operate tractors, rotary equipment, and other grass-cutting machinery, operate various tools and light equipment, and transport materials to and from job sites.
- Oversee and engage in tasks such as grass cutting, debris cleanup, leaf raking, shrubbery trimming, brush cutting, road patching, snow shoveling, and plowing to ensure safe and clean park conditions.
- Develop and implement maintenance plans for parks and playgrounds, identifying areas that need regular maintenance, setting priorities, and allocating resources.
- Guide the inspection and maintenance of park graffiti removal equipment.
- Work with other staff, sometimes from other departments, to coordinate maintenance projects, communicating with other departments about project schedules, budgets, and safety requirements.
- Train and supervise seasonal employees and volunteers, providing training on safety procedures, equipment operation, and maintenance practices.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols by crew members, including the proper use of safety clothing and equipment.
- Maintain records as needed, summarizing maintenance activities, identifying areas for improvement, and making recommendations for future projects.
- Graduation from high school and 5 to 7 years' experience in the use of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment.
- 5 to 7 years' experience in groundskeeping, including 3-5 years as a Caretaker for the City of New Haven.
- Knowledge of the construction and maintenance and groundskeeping trades, including proficiency in multiple areas such as groundskeeping, snow removal, light equipment operation, turf management, and playground maintenance.
- Understanding of basic landscaping principles and knowledge of grounds and athletic field maintenance methods and procedures.
- Ability to drive vehicles, trucks, and operate light equipment.
- Proficiency in tool, machine, and equipment use and care within park maintenance.
- Ability to perform skilled and unskilled labor tasks, both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to organize, assign, prioritize, and supervise tasks for the crew, ensuring that routine maintenance and more complex projects are completed in a timely manner.
- Awareness of relevant safety regulations and codes related to playground equipment, park structures, and public spaces to ensure compliance and safety for park visitors.
- Knowledge of safety precautions necessary when using equipment and related chemicals.
- Working knowledge in the use of park maintenance equipment and safety equipment.
- Ability to quickly assess and address maintenance issues, troubleshoot equipment problems, and propose effective solutions.
- Capability to lead by example, motivate team members, and foster a sense of camaraderie among crew members without formal supervisory authority.
- Capacity to mediate minor conflicts or issues among crew members.
- Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions, work priorities, and unexpected maintenance challenges that may arise.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills for both written and oral instructions.
- Ability to keep simple records and make reports.
- Skill in building and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance.
- Possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver's license.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years as a Caretaker for the City of New Haven.
