The Medical Support Specialist (MSS) plays a key role in executing routine medical and testing procedures under the direct supervision of the attending clinician. This position also involves supporting various operational areas within the facility, including patient registration and referral management. The MSS is tasked with providing efficient and precise one-on-one patient care while thriving in a dynamic environment. Ensuring that every patient receives top-notch clinical care and an excellent experience from courteous and skilled colleagues is paramount.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct Department of Transportation (DOT) and Non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings.
- Prepare patients for physical assessments, including taking vital signs and conducting necessary ancillary tests such as vaccinations, phlebotomy, pulmonary function tests, and audiograms.
- Execute rapid screening tests (influenza, strep, mono, glucose).
- Assist healthcare providers during examinations and treatments.
- Carry out routine medical procedures as directed by the treating clinician and triage urgent patients as required.
- Prepare and assist clinicians with procedural setups and injury management.
- Apply dressings, bandages, and splints as instructed by the treating clinician.
- Dispense medications and durable medical equipment as prescribed by the clinician, adhering to state regulations.
- Perform quality assurance checks on medical equipment and testing processes utilized in the center.
- Maintain inventory, clean examination rooms and equipment, and restock supplies as necessary.
- Operate and maintain all medical devices and equipment, ensuring proper calibration and record-keeping in line with current policies.
- Alert supervisors immediately regarding any equipment malfunctions, supply shortages, or operational issues.
- Collaborate with center leadership to assist with patient flow and volume management.
- Keep patients informed about expected wait times throughout their visit.
- Handle clerical tasks related to patient care and maintain accurate records.
- Ensure precision in documentation.
- Perform front office duties, including greeting patients, obtaining authorizations, checking patients in and out, communicating wait times, managing a multi-line phone system, and distributing employer results and paperwork as necessary.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and safety protocols.
- Participate in center staff meetings or huddles as required.
- Help maintain a clean and organized facility.
- Complete any necessary training, including ongoing clinical competency training.

Qualifications
Education Level: Vocational/Technical/Business School
- Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution (credentials must comply with state regulations) or Military Medical Specialist with current Medical Assistant credentials.
Experience Requirements
- Typically requires a minimum of six months of experience as a medical assistant.
- Familiarity with medical procedures and terminology.
- Preferred knowledge of occupational medicine requirements specific to the state.
