Job Overview

The Residential Support Specialist plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and educational atmosphere for individuals with developmental disabilities. This position requires a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for clients through various means.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Create a Positive Environment: Establish a nurturing and encouraging learning space, implementing strategies to assist clients in managing social, emotional, and physical challenges.
  2. Physical Demands: Engage in active work, including lifting and transferring individuals weighing 70-75 lbs, both indoors and outdoors.
  3. Safety Protocols: Employ approved protective techniques to ensure the safety of clients and staff.
  4. Individual Care Plans: Execute and monitor Individual Plans of Care, documenting progress and addressing any barriers to success.
  5. Health Monitoring: Observe and report any medical, physical, or behavioral changes in clients, ensuring timely communication with supervisors.
  6. Medication Administration: Once certified, administer medications as per established guidelines and report any discrepancies immediately.
  7. Appointment Management: Assist clients in scheduling and attending medical appointments, ensuring adherence to medical advice.
  8. Meal Planning: Participate in the planning and preparation of meals, ensuring dietary needs are met.
  9. Housekeeping Duties: Maintain cleanliness and safety of the residence, reporting any maintenance needs promptly.
  10. Professional Conduct: Interact with clients, families, and community members in a respectful and professional manner.
  11. Training Participation: Engage in ongoing training and professional development as required.
  12. Financial Accountability: Maintain accurate records of petty cash and client funds.
  13. Confidentiality: Uphold the privacy rights of individuals and adhere to confidentiality policies.
  14. Community Engagement: Facilitate community outings while ensuring health and safety protocols are followed.
  15. Policy Familiarization: Understand and comply with organizational policies and procedures.
  16. Neighborhood Relations: Assist in fostering positive relationships within the community.
Qualifications

1. Strong organizational skills and effective communication abilities with individuals with developmental disabilities.

2. Basic knowledge of educational and behavioral programs.

3. Willingness to stay informed about current issues in the field.

4. Ability to communicate across various ability levels.

5. Self-motivated with a desire to improve clients' quality of life.

6. Patience, optimism, and a nurturing demeanor are essential.

7. Valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required.

Education

A high school diploma or GED is required, with a preference for candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in a related field along with relevant experience.
