We are in search of a Mechanical and Optical Systems Engineer who excels in the design, assembly, and testing of compact and durable mechanical and optical systems.
In this hands-on role, you will collaborate closely with physicists and engineers to develop and validate high-performance, deployable sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, gravimeters, atomic clocks, frequency standards, and magnetometers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Collaborate with physicists and engineers to swiftly iterate on designs and prototypes.
2. Partner with electrical, mechanical, and optical engineers to create, assemble, and evaluate intricate sensor and clock hardware.
3. Source mechanical and optical components as needed.
4. Oversee the fabrication and assembly of components and subsystems.
5. Assemble and evaluate vacuum systems for performance.
6. Align lasers through single-mode optical fibers and bulk electro-optic and acousto-optic devices.
7. Work alongside electrical engineers to define, document, and execute PCB testing protocols.
8. Construct and assess prototype circuits and testing fixtures.
9. Acquire and maintain mechanical and optical testing equipment.
10. Document and report findings from validation tests.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven track record in developing complex optomechanical prototypes and products.
- Eagerness to master new fabrication techniques.
- Practical experience with precision testing instruments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- U.S. Government contracts necessitate that applicants be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Proficient in mechanical prototyping, including basic machining and finishing techniques.
- Hands-on experience with the design, assembly, and testing of vacuum systems.
- Expertise in aligning and securing micro-optical components.
- Fundamental understanding of Gaussian beam optics.
- Experience in optical testing for polarization, wavefront flatness, reflectivity, optical phase shifts, and beam aberrations.
- Familiarity with laser frequency stabilization techniques.
- Skilled in electrical prototyping, including PCB design, assembly, soldering, and rework.
- Experience in testing low-noise analog, mixed-signal, and RF electronics.
- Basic knowledge of data acquisition and simulation software such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Visual Basic, Python, and C or C++.
- Proficient in mechanical and optical design software (e.g., SolidWorks, COMSOL, ANSYS, Zemax, and FRED).
- Familiarity with OrCAD/Altium for schematic capture and PCB layout.
- Experience in developing hardware suitable for flight qualifications.
- Practical experience with optical testing equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor's degree in physics or engineering, or equivalent professional experience, with a background in an R&D setting.
