Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Emergency Technician to join our team at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. As a key member of our veterinary hospital, you will provide exceptional patient care and support to our emergency service, instruct and demonstrate techniques to students, and assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians in their work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care for ill and injured animals, including emergency triage, patient stabilization, and nursing care.
  • Instruct and demonstrate techniques to students, including emergency procedures and patient care.
  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians in their work, including surgery, anesthesia, and drug dosing.
  • Maintain supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas.
  • Develop and utilize skills in emergency triage, patient stabilization, nursing care, and emergency procedures.
Requirements
  • Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology.
  • Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization.
  • Experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software.
  • Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology.
  • Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization.
  • Experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software.
  • Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.
Working Conditions

This position requires lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually, or 150 pounds as a team. There is a risk of TB exposure or potential exposure to animal or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis. A respirator will be worn to minimize exposure.
