Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Control and Protection Officer III to join our team at Hawaii County, HI. As a key member of our Animal Control and Protection Agency, you will be responsible for enforcing laws and regulations related to animal welfare and control, providing exceptional customer service, and working collaboratively with our community to promote animal well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to requests for animal control and protection services, enforcing compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Investigate animal-related complaints and incidents, preparing reports and maintaining accurate records.
  • Conduct patrols and humanely capture and remove stray, uncontrolled, injured, or abused animals, transporting them to the shelter for impoundment.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and legible case files, work records, and forms, using a computer to access, input, and retrieve work-related information.
  • Humanely and effectively receive animals, enter information about the animals, take pictures of kennel animals, and identify shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling.
  • Humanely and effectively euthanize sick, injured, or dangerous animals.
  • Appear in court for testimony when required.
  • Stay up-to-date on Federal, State, and County laws, codes, and regulations relating to animal control and protection, governing the treatment, care, control, and protection of animals.
  • Take appropriate action in the removal of dead or injured animals from public and private property.
  • Attend and participate in shelter meetings, community, and educational presentations and events.
  • Provide information on laws and regulations governing the treatment, care, and control of animals to the public, participate in outreach services, educate the public about animal issues and responsible pet ownership, and promote a humane and caring attitude towards animals.
  • Regularly inspect equipment and vehicles for damage and wear, maintain equipment and assigned vehicles, and notify appropriate staff of any mechanical issues or other problems.
  • Immediately notify Animal Control and Protection Administrator and appropriate staff of any major incidents requiring special attention.
  • May assist with training lower-level staff on animal control operations.
  • Safely operate a vehicle to perform work-related travel.
Requirements
  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and four years of experience handling animals, with two years involving the enforcement, interpretation, or application of animal control laws, ordinances, regulations, or policies and procedures.
  • Valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing.
