Job Title: Animal Control and Protection Officer I

Job Summary:

As an Animal Control and Protection Officer I, you will be responsible for responding to requests for animal control and protection services, learning applicable laws and regulations, and performing other related duties as required.

Responsibilities:
  • Respond to requests for animal control and protection services, including stray, loose, and injured animals, dangerous dogs, animal cruelty, and attacks.
  • Assist with investigations and preparation of reports related to animal control and protection services.
  • Conduct patrols and humanely capture and remove stray, uncontrolled, injured, or abused animals from undesirable conditions and transport them to the shelter for impoundment.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and legible case files, work records, and forms, and reports, including accounts of investigative findings and other information.
  • Appear in court for testimony when required.
  • Keep up to date and provide information to staff and the public on laws and regulations governing the treatment, care, and control, and protection of animals.
  • Take appropriate action in the removal of dead or injured animals from public and private property.
  • Attend and participate in shelter meetings, community, and educational presentations and events.
  • Immediately notify Animal Control and Protection Administrator appropriate staff of any major incidents requiring special attention.
  • Learns and provides information on laws and regulations governing the treatment, licensing, care, and control of animals to the public in the field.
  • Regularly inspects equipment and vehicles for damage and wear; maintains equipment and assigned vehicles and notifies supervisor of any mechanical issues or other problems; keeps accurate records and inventory of vehicles and equipment.
  • Participates in outreach services; educates the public about animal issues and responsible pet ownership and promotes a humane and caring attitude towards animals.
  • Safely operates a vehicle to perform work-related travel.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HISET).
  • Two (2) years of experience handling animals.
  • Valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing.
