Assistant Professor in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking applications for two faculty roles within the Department of Computer Science, focusing on computational biology and bioinformatics (CBB) and related disciplines. These positions are primarily aimed at tenure-track assistant professors, though outstanding candidates with qualifications suitable for a tenured associate professor role may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
We encourage applications from candidates who specialize in CBB, particularly those with a focus on infectious diseases and strategies for pandemic prediction and prevention. Areas of interest include:
- Development of foundational machine learning models applicable to epidemiology and infectious diseases.
- Computational modeling of genomic sequences and protein evolution.
- Innovative methods for analyzing single-cell datasets and predicting gene regulatory networks.
- Understanding cellular differentiation mechanisms.
Successful candidates will engage in collaborative research projects and proposals, contributing to the education and mentorship of students and post-doctoral fellows.
Departmental Environment
The Department of Computer Science is experiencing significant growth and offers a vibrant, interdisciplinary community committed to both fundamental and applied research as well as innovative teaching methodologies. Currently, the department comprises 81 faculty members, including 63 tenured or tenure-track faculty, and 19 NSF CAREER awardees, serving over 1,500 undergraduate majors and more than 800 graduate students.
