Job Title: Executive Director

Join our team as the Executive Director at the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory, a leading organization in bird conservation. As the key management leader, you will drive strategic planning, fundraising, and stakeholder relationships to achieve our mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the administration and organizational finances of the Observatory.
  • Supervise staff and ensure the success of our pillar projects and future initiatives.
  • Develop and implement programs to support our pillar projects and partnerships.
  • Ensure grant compliance and work with staff to complete programmatic responsibilities.
  • Evaluate existing and potential new initiatives to ensure they meet our goals and mission.
  • Provide budget information and reports to the Board using standard accounting practices.
Requirements:
  • Advanced degree in ecology or wildlife biology (or similar focus) with a preference for demonstrated ornithological background or experience.
  • Demonstrated managerial leadership in an environmentally focused organization.
  • Ability to develop and guide the implementation of mission-centric research projects.
  • Dynamic team player with experience working directly with prospective donors.
  • Proven strong financial skills, including budget development and management, fundraising, and grant-writing.
  • Proven organizational abilities, including planning, delegating responsibilities, and task facilitation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three or more years of leadership experience with a scientific organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to use best available science to inform decision-making and/or program development.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors, committees, and organizational leadership.

This is a full-time exempt position requiring 40+ hours/week. Salary range: $68,500 - $72,000 annually. Benefits include 20 paid days off and 10 paid holidays.
