Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States State of Louisiana Full time

Position Overview:
The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) plays a crucial role in the equitable and effective collection of state tax revenues, which are essential for funding public services, regulating charitable gaming, and overseeing the sale of alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

Each unit within LDR collaborates to deliver essential services to the taxpayers of Louisiana and the agency's stakeholders.

Key Divisions of LDR:
Tax Collection, Charitable Gaming, Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC), Debt Recovery, Louisiana Tax Free Shopping Commission.

The Revenue Processing Center is tasked with the prompt processing of all tax returns, payments, and related documents, ensuring accurate data capture and timely deposit of funds.

Each year, this division manages approximately 6 million documents, including tax returns for 38 different tax categories, remittances, supporting documentation, and internal correspondence. This encompasses tax payments totaling $2.8 billion for the general fund.

To achieve these objectives, the division employs a combination of permanent and temporary staff, flexible scheduling, and pay differentials to attract and retain qualified employees.

The execution of these responsibilities directly influences the state's cash flow and the issuance of taxpayer refunds or collection notices.

Responsibilities:

The individual in this role will conduct audits of taxpayer account histories and data transmission records from the Revenue Processing Center to identify and rectify discrepancies.

Key duties include:

  • Providing technical guidance to departmental personnel regarding tax return data processing and its correct application to taxpayer accounts.
  • Responding to inquiries from field personnel and other departmental staff to verify or amend taxpayer account information.
  • Resolving discrepancies on taxpayer accounts related to payments, returns, or associated data.
  • Analyzing taxpayer account histories, data transmission records, validation reports, and other internal documents to ensure accuracy.
  • Utilizing clearing accounts to address batching errors and maintain alignment between taxpayer accounting, revenue accounting, and financial accounting.
  • Reviewing and correcting accounts that meet specific error conditions to ensure accurate taxpayer information is used for billing or account resolution.
  • Monitoring workflow to achieve division objectives.

Application Process:
No Civil Service test score is necessary for consideration for this position. Applications may be rejected if minimum qualifications are not met, if the application is incomplete, or if it is submitted after the closing date.

Applicants qualifying based on college education or a baccalaureate degree must provide an official college transcript to verify their credentials prior to appointment.

To apply, candidates should complete an electronic application that can be utilized for this position as well as future opportunities. It is the applicant's responsibility to monitor the status of their application throughout the recruitment process.

Minimum Qualifications:
A baccalaureate degree with six semester hours in accounting and six semester hours in any of the following fields: accounting, business, economics, finance, information systems management, or quantitative methods.

Substitutions:
Six years of full-time work experience in any field may substitute for the required baccalaureate degree. Candidates without a degree may combine work experience and college credit to meet the degree requirement.

Function of Work:
This role involves conducting in-house audits of various tax returns, including individual income, sales, excise, corporate/business, and more.

Job Distinctions:
This position differs from Revenue Tax Officers due to the professional-level responsibilities associated with auditing tax returns. It also differs from Revenue Tax Specialist 2 by the absence of experienced-level duties.

The incumbent will ensure compliance with state laws by auditing filed tax returns and supporting documentation, calculating penalties and interest as necessary, and making adjustments to taxpayer accounts.
