Position Overview
The Department of African & African-American Studies at the University of Kansas is seeking qualified educators to apply for part-time and/or full-time lecturer roles focused on language instruction (Amharic, Arabic, Haitian, Kiswahili, and Yoruba) as well as non-language courses (Black Popular Music, Legal Issues and the African American, African History and African American History). These roles are contingent upon the demand for instructors for courses offered each semester and during the two intensive summer sessions.

Department Environment
Successful candidates will become part of a vibrant Department of African and African-American Studies (AAAS) comprising 13 full-time faculty members and a dedicated Language Coordinator. AAAS collaborates with the Kansas African Studies Center (KASC) to host an annual Summer African Language Institute, offering several language courses at elementary and intermediate levels. KASC is recognized as one of ten federally-funded Title VI National Resource Centers for African Studies, with a robust faculty network.

Responsibilities
100% - Lecturer
  • For language instruction: Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour language courses as assigned.
  • For non-language instruction: Teach one to four 3-hour courses as assigned.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings, ensuring arrangements for substitutes in case of absence.
  • Deliver instruction throughout the semester, develop assignments, administer exams, evaluate student work, and provide feedback.
  • Maintain regular office hours weekly.
  • Participate in limited advising duties and attend professional development meetings as required.
  • Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.
  • Promote the visibility of African and Diasporic languages on campus.

100% Online Lecturer:
  • Teach a specified number of online undergraduate or graduate courses each semester.
  • Prepare for and attend all online class meetings, providing timely feedback and interaction.
  • Deliver instruction for courses, ensuring that asynchronous classes meet the same expectations as face-to-face instruction.
  • Administer assignments, tests, evaluate student work, and provide timely feedback.
  • Be available for student inquiries, maintaining expectations for timely responses.
  • Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.

Qualifications
Evaluation of candidates will be based on the following criteria:
  1. For language instruction: Demonstrated near-native or native proficiency and cultural knowledge.
  2. For undergraduate courses: A Master's degree in the respective language(s) or a Bachelor's degree with significant teaching experience.
  3. For graduate courses: A Ph.D. in the respective language(s) or a Master's degree with relevant teaching experience.
  4. For non-language instruction: A Master's degree in a relevant area and knowledge of the course content.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. For language instruction: Extensive teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  2. For non-language instruction: Advanced degrees and teaching experience or practical field experience.
  3. Evidence of successful teaching at the post-secondary level.
  4. Experience with online instructional technologies.
