Position Summary:

The role involves the decontamination, cleaning, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of medical and surgical equipment and supplies, adhering to guidelines set forth by CDC, OSHA, EPA, AAMI, Title 22, APIC, SGNA, and JC.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Fulfill orders from various departments.
  • Conduct equipment rounds, returning soiled items to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD); clean equipment according to manufacturer specifications and verify functionality before storage; check preventive maintenance status on equipment issued from and returned to SPD in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Manage phone communications.
  • Monitor inventory and replenish supplies, including specialty carts (e.g., isolation, latex, crash carts) as per departmental guidelines.
  • Order specialized beds and other patient equipment following medical center practices.
  • Disassemble, clean, or decontaminate surgical instruments in line with manufacturer recommendations, including ultrasonic cleaning.
  • Assemble, inspect, test, wrap, and date all operating room sets, including specialty sets according to departmental protocols and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Operate all equipment within the Sterile Processing Department, including steam sterilizers, plasma sterilizers, automated endoscope reprocessors, biological incubators, heat sealers, and instrument and cart washers.
  • Utilize the instrument and equipment tracking system throughout the Sterile Processing Department, including documentation of tests and sterilizer records.
  • Examine and maintain the integrity of sterile packages.
  • Prepare operating room case carts based on preference cards for all surgical procedures.
  • Enhance and ensure customer service for both internal and external clients.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned within the scope of training and service.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as a Sterile Processing Technician in an acute hospital setting, or as a Surgical Technician with two (2) years of recent experience in a Sterile Processing Department.

Education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Program with at least 400 clinical hours or a Surgical Technician program.

License, Certification, Registration
  • Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution - Technician Certification, or Registered Central Service Technician Certificate, or Surgical Technologist Certificate.

Additional Requirements:
  • Fundamental knowledge of instrument processing techniques, including decontamination, assembly, and sterilization.
  • Familiarity with Sterile Processing Department Policies and Procedures; ability to articulate on soaps and detergents, packaging methods, sterilization types and parameters, infection control practices, high-level disinfection practices, and safe practices in the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Understanding of medical, nursing, and surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and respond to audible alarms is essential.
  • Capacity to multitask and prioritize in a high-pressure environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

  • Expected to work every other weekend.
