Position Summary:

The Sterile Processing Technician Level II is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of medical and surgical equipment and supplies, adhering to guidelines set forth by CDC, OSHA, EPA, AAMI, Title 22, APIC, SGNA, and JC.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Process orders from various departments efficiently.
  • Conduct equipment rounds and manage soiled equipment returns to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD); ensure equipment is cleaned according to manufacturer specifications and verify functionality before storage.
  • Handle incoming calls professionally.
  • Manage inventory and restock supplies, including specialty carts as per departmental guidelines.
  • Order specialty beds and other patient equipment as required.
  • Disassemble, clean, and decontaminate surgical instruments following manufacturer guidelines, including ultrasonic cleaning.
  • Assemble, inspect, test, wrap, and date all operating room sets, including specialty sets, according to departmental protocols.
  • Operate all equipment within the Sterile Processing Department, including steam sterilizers, plasma sterilizers, automated endoscope reprocessors, biological incubators, heat sealers, and instrument washers.
  • Utilize the instrument and equipment tracking system throughout the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring accurate documentation of tests and sterilizer records.
  • Examine and maintain the integrity of sterile packages.
  • Prepare operating room case carts according to preference cards for all surgical procedures.
  • Enhance customer service for both internal and external clients.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned within the scope of training and service.
Qualifications:
Experience
  • A minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as a Sterile Processing Technician in an acute hospital setting, or as a Surgical Technician with equivalent experience in a Sterile Processing Department.

Education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Program, including 400 clinical hours, or a Surgical Technician program.

License, Certification, Registration
  • Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution as a Technician, or a Registered Central Service Technician Certificate, or a Surgical Technologist Certificate.

Additional Qualifications:
  • Fundamental knowledge of instrument processing techniques, including decontamination, assembly, and sterilization.
  • Familiarity with Sterile Processing Department Policies and Procedures, including knowledge of soaps and detergents, packaging methods, sterilization techniques, infection control practices, and safe practices within the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Understanding of medical, nursing, and surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and respond to audible alarms.
  • Capability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a high-pressure environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

  • Employees are expected to work every other weekend.
