Job Summary

We are seeking a seasoned News Director to lead our news team at WUOT FM, a public radio station serving East Tennessee. The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the editorial vision and strategy of the newsroom, ensuring high-quality content that meets the needs of our diverse audience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive editorial strategy that aligns with the station's mission and goals
  • Lead a team of journalists to produce engaging and informative content for various platforms
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to develop and implement digital strategies
  • Seek out and lead news collaboration efforts with other stations, student media organizations, and non-profit organizations
  • Direct daily news coverage and lead planning for major news events
  • Supervise the newsroom, including editors, reporters, and producers
  • Assign projects or stories and ensure that deadlines are met
  • Develop and implement training programs to enhance the skills of newsroom staff
  • Recruit and manage student interns
  • Critique and edit content to ensure accuracy, objectivity, and adherence to journalistic standards
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in news/journalism, with a bachelor's or master's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field
  • Ability to build relationships, effectively communicate, and relate well to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with internal and external contacts
  • Ability to creatively solve problems and be a self-starter with sound judgment
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks by assigned deadlines
  • Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly
  • Ability to be a strong team player committed to working with department and station colleagues to achieve collective goals
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field
  • Passion for and experience with public broadcasting
  • Knowledge of Knoxville and East Tennessee, including the people, music, cultures, issues, and geography
  • Knowledge of FCC guidelines and requirements
