Job Summary:

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Medical Assistant II to work at the Surgery Specialty Clinic. As a member of the patient care team, you will perform technical, patient care, and related clerical functions in the urgent care setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manage internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work.
  • Perform patient care related to vital signs, reviewing medications, allergies, lab draws, setting up and assisting with minor procedures, in-clinic treatments, point of care testing, removing staples and/or sutures, assisting with dressing changes, administering immunizations as ordered, and other duties as assigned.
  • Take and upload photos of wounds and Plastic Surgery Reconstruction.
  • Set up sterile field and assist with Plastics and General Surgery minor procedures.
  • Stock room with appropriate medical supplies and appropriate linens.
  • Provide psychological support to the patient and family based on assessed needs.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
  • Identify vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Perform related clerical tasks including answering phones, and providing information to other departments.
  • Treat matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Demonstrate consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers always.
  • Complete on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
