Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant II to join our team at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. As a Medical Assistant II, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical, patient care, and related clerical functions in the urgent care setting.
  • Coordinate all elements of the patient visit, including facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patients and related treatments, including but not limited to patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manage internal and external medical records to ensure accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work.
  • Perform patient care related to vital signs, reviewing medications, allergies, lab draws, setting up and assisting with minor procedures, in-clinic treatments, point of care testing, removing staples and/or sutures, assisting with dressing changes, administering immunizations as ordered, and other duties as assigned.
  • Takes and uploads photos of wounds and Plastic Surgery Reconstruction.
  • Setting up sterile field and assisting with Plastics and General Surgery minor procedures.
  • Stocks room with appropriate medical supplies and appropriate linens.
  • Provides psychological support to the patient and family based on assessed needs.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Identifies vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Performs related clerical tasks including answering phones, and providing information to other departments.
  • Treats matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Demonstrates consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers always.
  • Completes on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered.
Requirements
  • Certification OR registration as a Medical Assistant OR completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, OR
  • Completion of a healthcare profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
