Job Summary:

As a Biological Science Assistant - Spawning Ground Surveyor, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's mission to protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats.

This position involves conducting spawning ground surveys by locating, driving to, and walking or boating selected stream reaches to count naturally spawning salmon. You will collect biological information from dead salmonids, including length, gender, species, fin clip/tag status, scale samples, and fish snouts.

Additionally, you will be responsible for data management, entering field data into data collection devices, uploading data to servers daily, and ensuring data accuracy. You will also participate in required training sessions, including field survey orientation, data entry, defensive driving, CPR/First Aid, and other agency requirements.

This position requires a flexible work schedule, with varying hours worked on a daily basis, and the ability to work independently for extended periods in remote and semi-remote areas without cell phone and/or internet connectivity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in required training sessions

Requirements:

  • Minimum qualifications not established, but related skills and experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently in remote areas
  • Flexible work schedule

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience identifying adult salmonids
  • Operating boats in rivers
  • Conducting stream surveys
  • Sampling fish
  • Communicating with members of the public

Working Conditions:

This position involves working in remote and semi-remote areas, often in inclement weather, and requires a flexible work schedule. Employees are expected to maintain a professional working relationship with their partner(s) and effectively communicate with ODFW, other government agencies, private landowners, and members of the public.
