Produce Quality Control Specialist

Job Summary:

The Produce Quality Control Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the quality of all incoming shipments of assigned product groups, as well as product stored in the warehouse and distribution center. This role requires a high degree of initiative and creativity, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently with little supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect all incoming shipments of assigned product groups and product stored in the warehouse and distribution center.
  • Rate products according to company and USDA specifications, maintaining necessary inspections and rejection records.
  • Accept or reject product based on condition, short weight, transit damage, grade, temperature, and other reasons.
  • Inform buyers on product quality as necessary.
  • Prepare warehouse condition reports as requested.
  • Organize shipping schedule for all items having different degrees of maturity, giving shipping instructions to assembly via warehouse supervision.
  • Determine the dollar cost and cause of warehouse shrink due to spoilage, making recommendations to management regarding reduction in shrink.
  • Maintain logs and records of spoilage, including information on overbuying, lack of retail performance, weak produce, etc.
  • Ensure that appropriate personnel are trained in the proper handling, storage, rotation, and selection of produce to be shipped to retail units.
  • Ensure that shipping crews are provided with daily information on lots to be shipped.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 – 5 years' experience in food manufacturing or retail produce environment.
  • Retail Produce knowledge, and USDA and FDA inspection experience helpful.
  • Good management skills and ability to relate to diverse workforce.
  • Must be self-motivated with a positive attitude and able to handle and address changing priorities.
  • Possess a high degree of initiative and creativity with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic statistical knowledge helpful.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.

Physical Environment:

  • The incumbent will regularly be moving about the warehouse with a temperature range of 55 to 30 degrees.
  • Incumbent may sit for extended periods of time at a desk or computer terminal.
  • Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment during the normal workday.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job duties.
