Aquatic Safety Officer

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Aquatic Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring the well-being of all individuals in and around the swimming area. This role necessitates vigilance to avert accidents, proactively monitor activities, and respond to emergencies swiftly and effectively.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Be prepared for rescues. Always wear a rescue tube, appropriate swim attire, guard shirt, whistle, and necessary protective gear.
- Maintain continuous observation of the aquatic environment. Conduct thorough scans of your designated area every 10 seconds from bottom to top.
- React to any emergency situation within 10 seconds, adhering to your training and the emergency protocols established by the organization.
- Select your position considering glare, pool activity, swimmer capabilities, and the size of your zone. Ensure optimal visibility of all areas within your zone to respond promptly to any distressed swimmer or emergency.
- Regularly change your position. Inspect your area for potential hazards or unsafe conditions before taking responsibility for a zone or the pool.
- Assist with additional tasks, such as water quality testing, swim assessments, cleaning, organizing equipment, checking first aid supplies, and other duties as directed by the Aquatics Director during periods of inactivity.
- Understand and consistently enforce all regulations and policies using the Q-1-2 enforcement method. Be firm yet courteous when explaining rules to members. Conduct swim tests and document participant eligibility according to organizational guidelines.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatics Staff Manual.
- Participate in monthly training sessions and attend required staff meetings.
- Complete incident reports following any occurrence and submit them to your supervisor before the end of your shift. Inform the Aquatics Director of any concerns.
- Arrange coverage for any shifts you cannot fulfill and communicate this with the Aquatics Director.
- Follow the established pool schedule, ensuring the setup reflects the number of lanes available.
- NEVER LEAVE THE POOL UNATTENDED.
- NO CELL PHONES ON THE POOL DECK WHILE IN GUARD ATTIRE.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Current lifeguard certification from a recognized organization.
- Current certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration.
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergencies.
- Strong decision-making skills.
- Positive demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.
- Professionalism and maturity reflecting the serious nature of aquatic safety.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Pass a water and skills assessment.
- Maintain the physical and mental readiness required for certification.
- Stay alert with no lapses in focus.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Observe all areas of responsibility. Corrective eyewear should not hinder rescue performance.
- Ability to hear distress signals in the aquatic environment.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks necessary for water rescues.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distances.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/TRAINING:
- Lifeguard certification – initial and biannual recertification.
- Basic Life Support (CPR-Pro) – initial and annual recertification.
- Adult and Pediatric First Aid – initial and biannual recertification.
- Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen – within the first 90 days and biannual recertification.
- Child Abuse Prevention – initial and annual refresher training.
