Position Title: Elections Clerk

Job Overview:
This role is designed to assist the Auditor and Deputy Auditor of Elections in the efficient execution of electoral processes. The main responsibility involves supporting the preparation and management of elections, ensuring a smooth operation for both the public and officials interacting with the Auditor's Office. The position typically requires availability from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential evening and weekend hours as necessary.

Essential Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is required, complemented by up to one year of relevant experience or academic training in office management, clerical duties, or related fields. Proficiency in secretarial tasks, word processing, and spreadsheet applications is essential, along with any equivalent combination of education and experience that equips the candidate with the necessary skills for this role.

Preferred Experience:
Prior experience as a Precinct Election Official or within a County Auditor's Office is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver prompt and effective service to the public and colleagues interacting with the County Auditor's office, whether in person, via mail, or through electronic communication.
  • Draft routine correspondence, manage billing processes, and complete necessary documentation.
  • Conduct data entry, maintain spreadsheets, and generate various reports as required.
  • Act as a Notary Public when necessary.
  • Assist in the planning, execution, and post-election activities, including ballot processing, voter registration, and absentee voting support.
  • Maintain accurate records of absentee voters and ballots, providing assistance to voters and election officials as needed.
  • Support general office functions and serve as a backup for claims processing and warrant management.

Supervisory Duties:
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

  • Ability to utilize various administrative documents and resources effectively.
  • Competence in producing clear and well-formatted reports.

  • Capability to follow instructions in various formats.
  • Good judgment and problem-solving abilities in diverse situations.
  • Professional representation of Cerro Gordo County in all interactions.

Education and Experience Requirements:
A high school diploma or GED is mandatory, with additional experience or education in office administration or related fields being beneficial.

Language and Reasoning Skills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and the public.
  • Skill in handling public interactions with courtesy and professionalism.
  • Common sense reasoning to address work-related challenges.

Certificates and Licenses:
Must be able to obtain a Notary Public commission in Iowa.

Physical and Work Environment:
This role may involve light physical activity, including the movement of office materials. The work environment is primarily office-based, with moderate noise levels.
