InsideHigherEd is dedicated to fostering an inclusive educational environment that supports diverse student populations. We are looking for currently enrolled graduate students to take on the role of mentors, assisting high school students in their transition to higher education. This position is designed to enhance the support services available to students, ensuring they have access to the resources necessary for their academic and professional development.
This is a temporary position.
Objectives
The primary aim of the Graduate Student Mentor role is to facilitate the transition of high school students to higher education. Mentors will establish relationships with assigned high schools, providing guidance and support to students. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting students in understanding the pathways to higher education.
- Assisting with college applications, financial literacy, and enrollment processes.
- Familiarizing students with various support programs available.
- Creating a welcoming environment that promotes student success and integration into college life.
- Utilizing technology to track student progress and provide necessary information.
- Participating in campus events and collaborative initiatives as needed.
Duration
This apprenticeship is renewable annually, allowing mentors to participate for up to three years while enrolled in a qualified educational program, with a maximum of 20 hours of work per week.
Assessment
Mentors will work under the supervision of a college administrator, with their performance evaluated through direct observation and feedback from students.

- Learn about eligibility requirements and processes for various programs.
- Develop strategies to address and overcome barriers to college access.
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment in a master's program at an accredited institution.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Attention to detail and effective record-keeping abilities.
- Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive environment.
- Sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Desirable Qualifications
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or American Sign Language is preferred.
Working Conditions
- Mentors will be assigned to high school sites within the designated community.
- The work schedule will consist of a maximum of 20 hours per week, including time spent at the school and for training activities.
- Reliable transportation is necessary for commuting to assigned locations.
