Position Summary:
This is a reserve/casual phlebotomy role based at a client site. The candidate must be available to work on specific days and times.

The Phlebotomist embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program while complying with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts phlebotomy and other laboratory specimen collections in accordance with age-related standards and departmental protocols.
  • Utilizes the AIDET model to enhance patient safety and minimize healthcare errors.
  • Reviews physician orders to ensure completeness for lab services and accurately enters orders for lab tests.
  • Communicates effectively with patients and provides appropriate post-phlebotomy care.
  • Processes specimens promptly to maintain sample integrity, including labeling, centrifuging, and packaging for transport.
  • Monitors and records equipment performance and quality control records, reporting any concerns to management.
  • Understands and maintains laboratory equipment, ensuring timely communication regarding specimen procurement issues.
  • Maintains a safe working environment, adhering to biohazard waste procedures.
  • Performs clerical duties related to lab operations, including order entry and patient information retrieval.
  • Participates in cost-reduction efforts and process improvements.
  • Engages in continuing education and competency assessments.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and assists colleagues in a professional manner.
  • Applies critical thinking and sound judgment to resolve challenges.
  • Complies with ethical business practices in all organizational policies.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a recognized organization or relevant training, or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting.

Preferred:

  • Experience with a diverse patient population.
  • Familiarity with lab specimen processing and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record systems and medical terminology.
