The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program is committed to supporting pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children in understanding nutrition for better health outcomes. As a WIC Nutrition Support Specialist, your responsibilities will include:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Providing education to expectant mothers and their families about the advantages of breastfeeding.
  • Supporting new mothers in mastering breastfeeding techniques.
  • Facilitating breastfeeding workshops in person, via virtual platforms, and in various community locations.
  • Assisting WIC Nutritionists with breastfeeding consultations for program participants.
  • Guiding WIC breastfeeding participants on the proper use of breast pumps when necessary.
  • Maintaining records and inventory of breastfeeding supplies and ensuring the upkeep of breastfeeding equipment.
  • Conducting client interviews to assess income eligibility for WIC program enrollment based on established criteria.
  • Issuing food benefits in accordance with dietary prescriptions, securing necessary signatures, and organizing documentation efficiently.
  • Coordinating appointments using computerized systems and following up on missed and upcoming appointments.
  • Managing a multi-line phone system and handling calls promptly and effectively.
  • Communicating with participants via text and phone to assist with document uploads and related processes.
  • Collecting height, weight, and blood work samples from clients.
  • Exhibiting a welcoming, customer-focused, and compassionate demeanor.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to travel to local clinics as needed.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of clients.
  • Capability to handle challenging client interactions.
  • Proficiency in computer usage.
  • Ability to work in environments with varying noise levels and temperature conditions.
  • Awareness of potential exposure to communicable diseases.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience breastfeeding or expressing milk for at least one infant.
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard clinic hours and settings.
  • Completion of paraprofessional training for WIC Peer Counselors is required.
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is necessary; some college coursework is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of administrative experience is required; two years is preferred.
  • A valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation are essential.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
