Special Requirements: Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with the Code of Laws of South Carolina as a Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer is mandatory. Candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and successfully complete a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, and capable of performing all essential job functions. Upon hiring, candidates must obtain and retain a commission issued by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Background Investigation: A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted, including checks on driving history, criminal history, employment history, references, credit history, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, medical examination, and drug screening.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage in law enforcement initiatives related to shellfish program activities and other state-regulated environmental activities.
  • Assist in executing a shellfish growing water sampling initiative and state shellfish inspection programs.
  • Support stream monitoring personnel in data collection and maintain all shellfish program equipment.
  • Compile essential administrative reports and shellfish program documentation.
  • Participate in periodic staff meetings and training sessions as required.
Minimum and Additional Requirements:

DES Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in natural or physical sciences or a related technical field; or an associate degree in the same fields with two years of relevant environmental health experience; or a high school diploma with four years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with boating activities and shellfish regulations and standards is advantageous.
