About the Department:

The Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) at George Mason University is dedicated to enhancing the skills of educational professionals in Virginia. Our mission is to provide comprehensive technical support and professional development to those involved in the education of students with disabilities. We focus on improving instructional and behavioral methodologies to ensure academic success for all students, particularly in schools facing challenges in meeting state educational standards.

About the Position:

The role involves delivering training and technical assistance aimed at specially designed instruction and effective practices for educational staff working with students with disabilities in Virginia. This position is integral to the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and leads professional learning opportunities for school division personnel in specialized instruction for students with disabilities;
  • Provides tailored technical assistance to enhance evidence-based practices within the MTSS framework, aligning with state and TTAC initiatives;
  • Collaborates with the TTAC Inclusive Practices team to deliver targeted support and resources to school staff;
  • Engages with VDOE leadership on statewide projects related to specially designed instruction;
  • Offers ongoing coaching and support to educational staff through both virtual and in-person training sessions;
  • Works alongside TTAC colleagues to integrate literacy initiatives with broader educational goals;
  • Participates in relevant professional learning sessions and meetings.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree or higher in Special Education, or a comparable combination of education and experience;
  • Significant experience in special education and professional development (typically 5+ years);
  • Leadership experience (typically 1+ year) in an educational setting;
  • In-depth knowledge of specially designed instruction and multi-tiered systems of support;
  • Familiarity with coaching models that support teacher development and capacity building;
  • Understanding of high leverage practices and their application in diverse educational contexts;
  • Proven ability to adapt instruction to meet varied student needs;
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills, with experience leading professional learning groups;
  • Competence in planning and delivering effective professional learning in various formats;
  • Experience in developing and evaluating strategic action plans for educational projects;
  • Proficiency in using data to inform instructional practices and decision-making;
  • A valid driver's license that meets all operational requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in special education within a public school environment;
  • Experience collaborating with division-level administrators;
  • Experience managing medium to large-scale projects, including staff supervision;
  • Familiarity with implementing multi-tiered systems of support and high leverage practices;
  • Knowledge of the I'm Determined project;
  • Understanding of implementation science.
