Position Summary

This opportunity is with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. This is a full-time hybrid position for an Electrical Engineer. The selected candidate will be tasked with conducting reviews of designed projects (QA/QC), examining OneLines, Schematics, Detail Wiring Drawings, Nameplates, and more, ensuring the reliability of the Electrical Grid/System and optimal power distribution. Furthermore, the Engineer will oversee power systems to prevent operational errors and enhance the overall efficiency and safety of our personnel and electrical systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform engineering design evaluations for substation projects, including QA/QC checklists, one lines, schematics, detail wiring diagrams, and nameplates.
  • Review QA/QC checklists for all substation projects and provide feedback promptly as per the scheduled timeline.
  • Assess IFC designs for all substation projects and return feedback in a timely manner according to the schedule.
  • Prepare review packages and distribute them to designers, lead engineers, and supervisors promptly.
  • Track and log design issues in the design issue tracker database following each project review.
  • Evaluate NESC clearance requirements to ensure public safety is upheld.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external engineering firms.
  • Offer engineering support to colleagues to facilitate their understanding of standards, procedures, designs, and related issues.
  • Analyze engineering challenges and propose suitable solutions or alternative sound electrical design options.
  • Review manufacturer drawings for adherence to specifications.
  • Validate equipment ratings based on accurate documentation.
  • Foster communication across business units regarding project reviews and organize project QA/QC compliance meetings as necessary.
  • Research and implement innovative ideas to automate QA/QC processes, enhancing efficiency and minimizing human error.
  • Ensure that standards, equipment, and protection specifications are reviewed against best practices.
  • Participate in industry meetings to ensure FirstEnergy's influence in industry direction (e.g., IEEE, EPRI).
  • Possession of an Engineer in Training and Professional Engineering license is preferred, with future advancement likely linked to the ability to stamp and seal engineering design drawings as a Professional Engineer.
  • Contribute to FirstEnergy's reputation as a high-performing organization through responsible and effective work performance.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives include: (1) a Professional Engineer's (PE) License (2) a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of engineering experience is required.
  • Experience in Electrical Design, Electricity, and Electrical Engineering skills, as well as power distribution and power systems, is preferred.
  • Experience with renewable energy and sustainable power solutions is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are necessary.
  • Must promote a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for colleagues and the public.
  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation are required.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the service area and to manufacturer locations, and to work extra and irregular hours is essential.
