Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The role involves supporting nursing staff in the Emergency Department by delivering patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Maintain patient comfort and safety, responding promptly to all patient requests.

2) Facilitate patient transport to various departments or assist with arrivals and departures.

3) Aid nursing staff with daily living activities and reposition patients as per care plans.

4) Conduct vital sign checks, perform blood glucose tests, monitor input/output, carry out EKGs, administer CPR, draw blood, apply casts/splints, initiate IVs, and weigh patients as required.

5) Responsible for inventory management, including stocking supplies and disposing of expired items.

6) Manage patient data entry and retrieval through electronic medical records (EMR).

7) Communicate effectively with members of the healthcare team.

8) Ensure the nursing station, unit, and lobby are kept organized and orderly.

9) Order and maintain necessary supplies at appropriate levels.

10) Process patient charts for admissions and discharges.

11) Document care interventions and treatments in the EMR system.

12) Welcome patients and assist with initial registration procedures.

13) Provide basic care while supervising patients with altered mental status, psychiatric conditions, or those under emergency detention.

14) Engage in performance improvement initiatives for the Emergency Department.

15) Clean and disinfect used sterile equipment, ensuring proper handling for central sterilization.

16) Assist medical personnel with procedures such as laceration repairs, incision and drainage, foreign body removal, and eye examinations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or final-year nursing student required.
  • De-escalation training (CPI certification within six months of employment) in the relevant specialty.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is necessary.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Competency checklist must be completed prior to initiating IVs.
