Your Role
Hourly Rate: $17.50
The Trainee in Research and Production Management is tasked with acquiring, demonstrating knowledge and skills, and achieving certification in all facets of company systems and pork industry standards. Responsibilities include collecting data and samples as specified in research protocols and overseeing animal care during research trials. This position operates under the guidance of the relevant department leader while engaging in all duties as part of a learning and development process.
Key Responsibilities
- Regularly collaborates at various research farm locations as determined by data collection needs and employee schedules.
- Engages daily in research farm activities, including the weighing and relocation of pigs from weaning to market age.
- Implements and adheres to all protocols for each research trial, ensuring accurate data recording.
- Masters all data collection methods, including the operation of pen and individual scales.
- Oversees the manufacturing of research feed at the feed mill and its delivery to the farm.
- Maintains research equipment and facilities, including computerized feeding systems.
- Acquires knowledge and certification in all farm department areas, fulfilling responsibilities as outlined in the Breeding/Farrowing and Nursery/Finishing job descriptions.
- Develops a comprehensive understanding of company systems, including pig production processes, animal flow, farm health, genetics, and husbandry.
- Completes all hourly tasks under supervision, achieving certification in each role upon demonstrating competence.
- Prepares reports detailing experiences and identifies opportunities for improvement.
- Ensures compliance with all environmental laws and procedures endorsed by Smithfield LLC.
- Completes Leadership Certification requirements.
- Understands and adheres to company policies regarding biosecurity, animal welfare, and environmental management in job performance.
- Reports any environmental, animal care, and biosecurity concerns to the supervisor immediately.
- Acts as the Head of Department as needed by management.
- Available for emergency situations, including alarm calls, inclement weather, power outages, personnel shortages, and environmental emergencies.
- Progresses through the Manager Training development program and communicates any issues affecting completion to Human Resources.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- A four-year college degree in Animal Science or a related Agricultural field, or equivalent supervisory experience and/or previous swine experience; or a combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work an average of 48 hours per week, with frequent variations.
- Availability for weekend, evening, and holiday work as required.
- Daily hygiene protocols, including showering in and out of farm facilities.
- Leadership capabilities.
- Willingness to relocate for training and first managerial assignment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software and general computer literacy.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Respectful, approachable, and team-oriented, fostering strong working relationships and a positive work atmosphere.
- Supportive of the mission to raise swine for high-quality pork production.
- Willingness to learn and perform tasks related to animal husbandry, including euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, and blood sampling.
- Capability to operate high-pressure washing systems.

- Occasional lifting or moving of up to 50 lbs.

- Ability to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
