Your Role

Hourly Rate: $17.50

The Trainee in Production Management is tasked with acquiring, demonstrating, and certifying knowledge and skills across all facets of company systems and pork industry standards. Responsibilities include gathering data and samples as specified in research protocols and overseeing animal care during research trials. This position operates under the guidance of the designated department leader while engaging in all duties as part of a learning and development process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Regularly collaborates at both research farm locations as directed by management based on data collection needs and employee schedules.
  • Engages daily in research farm activities, including weighing and transitioning pigs from weaning to market age.
  • Implements and adheres to all protocols for each research trial, ensuring accurate data recording.
  • Master various data collection methods, including operating pen and individual scales.
  • Oversee the production of research feed at the feed mill and its delivery to the farm.
  • Maintain research equipment and facilities, including computerized feeding systems.
  • Acquire knowledge and certification in all farm department areas, fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in the Breeding/Farrowing and Nursery/Finishing job descriptions.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of company systems, including pig production processes, animal flow, farm health, genetics, and husbandry.
  • Perform and excel in all hourly tasks under supervision, achieving certification in each role upon demonstrating competence.
  • Compile and present reports on experiences and suggest areas for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and procedures adhered to by Smithfield LLC.
  • Complete Leadership Certification as required.
  • Understand and comply with company policies regarding biosecurity, animal welfare, and environmental management systems while performing job duties.
  • Report any environmental, animal care, and biosecurity concerns to the supervisor immediately.
  • Act as the Head of Department as needed by management.
  • Be available for emergency situations, including alarm responses, adverse weather, power outages, personnel shortages, and environmental crises.
  • Progress through the Manager Training development program and communicate any issues affecting program completion to Human Resources.

Qualifications

  • A four-year college degree in Animal Science or a related Agricultural field, or equivalent supervisory experience and/or previous swine experience; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work an average of 48 hours per week, with variability.
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required.
  • Daily showering in and out of farm facilities is mandatory.
  • Leadership capabilities are essential.
  • Willingness to relocate for training and initial managerial assignments is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software and general computer literacy is necessary.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Must demonstrate respect, approachability, and teamwork while fostering strong working relationships and a positive work atmosphere.
  • Support for the mission of producing high-quality pork products for human consumption is essential.
  • Willingness to learn and perform tasks such as euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging, blood sampling, and other standard animal husbandry procedures.
  • Capability to operate a high-pressure washing system is required.
