Job Summary

The University of Oklahoma is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Collections Assistant to join our Archaeology Department. As a Collections Assistant, you will play a critical role in inventorying, cataloging, and digitizing archaeological collections, ensuring compliance with NAGPRA regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inventory and rehouse archaeological collections with precision and care.
  • Work with sensitive NAGPRA collections, participating in consultations and ensuring respectful handling of cultural materials.
  • Create accurate catalog records in a database management system for archaeological collections and associated documentation.
  • Assist with project coordination, providing general support to the Archaeology Collections Manager/NAGPRA Coordinator and Curator of Archaeology.
  • Provide exceptional care for the collections, manage dates and records, and identify, prepare, tag, and catalog specimens for new and existing collections.
  • Engage with visitors, responding to patron requests remotely and in person, and delivering informative tours to the public.
  • Perform various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the position's requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • 48 months of museum-related work experience may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and attention to detail skills.
  • Ability to handle small items with extreme care and read/understand written materials.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software and experience working with databases.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively and respectfully with tribal representatives and organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of acceptable museum practices and standards for collection care, collection management, documentation, conservation, and registration methods.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology with an emphasis on archaeology or physical anthropology.
  • Archaeological experience in the field, museum, or lab setting.
  • Museum experience, especially working with archaeological collections.
  • Working knowledge of NAGPRA legislation and an interest in deepening this knowledge.
  • General knowledge of the pre-contact and historical archaeology of the Plains or Southeast US.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift 35lbs, climb ladders, and engage in repetitive motions.
  • Must be capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Must use established occupational health and safety practices.
