Job Summary

The Farm Operations Technician position plays a vital role in facilitating and assisting with implementing Farm Operation activities to enable research, education, communication, development, and production projects to function as designed. This position reports to the Farm Managers and is responsible for carrying out daily activities while maintaining activity logs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute day-to-day tasks and participate in project design through completion
  • Lead and/or supervise volunteers when requested and maintain a clean and organized work area and office space
  • Field Operations:
    • Operate between research plots, production fields, and educational field
    • Maintain field operations logs for organic certification
    • Tillage, planting, inputs, etc.
    • Tractor driving, using tractor-mounted implements, using irrigation, transplanting, seeding, cultivating, hand weeding, spraying, harvesting, collecting data, and any other field tasks requested
  • Landscaping:
    • Assist in planning and execution of pollinator habitats and riparian zone
    • Maintain all input and planting records
    • Maintain an aesthetically pleasing appearance across entire frontend of campus
    • Prepare sites on main campus for weddings, meetings, tours, events, etc.
    • Transplanting, hand weeding, watering, seeding, dead-heading, harvesting, spraying, pruning, trellising, mowing, trimming fence lines, and any other landscaping tasks requested
    • Assist in planning of beneficial insect habitats and beneficial for gardens
  • Livestock:
    • Assist Research Technicians/project leaders in carrying out research projects
    • Assist farm managers and research technicians in planting, mowing and general maintenance of hog pasture
    • Maintain animal/chore logs, assists in data entry
    • Feeding, watering, moving fences, moving animals, collecting data, and any other livestock tasks requested
    • Clean and maintain all barns, pens and other housing facilities housing
    • Able to work independently and assist in making strategic decisions for the hog and poultry production
    • Assist research team with data preparation for papers and other presentations
    • Assist collaborators with sample collection and processing
    • Other tasks as assigned and provide additional support as needed
  • Greenhouse/High Tunnels:
    • Assist specialist in execution of production plans for all CEG structures
  • Sales/Distribution:
    • Assist Food Production Specialist in preparing and delivering Farm Ops products
  • Events/Facilities:
    • Assist in preparing wedding and events sites
    • Assist Greenhouse/Landscaping Specialist in maintaining an aesthetically pleasing area before every event regardless of location
    • Assist Facilities Manager in setting up equipment and seating for all events
    • Participate in webinars and interviews when requested
  • Orchard/Perennial Systems:
    • Assist in Rodale apple orchard maintenance, planting, pruning, harvest, weed management, and any other tasks requested
    • Assist at Schantz property with orchard work, pruning, harvesting and maintenance
    • Provide support where needed
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 2 years of experience in agriculture preferred
  • Caring and compassionate with animals
  • Ability to maintain and organize activity logs
  • Positive, motivated, professional attitude
  • Flexible schedule as farm work can be unpredictable
  • Works well in both a teamwork-oriented environment and alone
  • Able to lift and carry +50lbs
  • Able and willing to work in any weather
  • Willingness to provide input, explore new tasks, try new or different approaches and openness to new ideas
