Job Summary

San Jose State University is seeking a highly skilled Academic Development Coordinator to join our team. The successful candidate will report to the head football coach and have a dotted line to the Managing Director of SARC. This role will perform duties under general supervision and take work lead direction from the Senior Associate AD for Football Operations and the Managing Director of SARC to achieve specified outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Academic High-Risk Management - Identify and support student-athletes on academic probation, IEP, and/or engaged in academic support programs.
  • Academic Support Coordination - Liaise with coaches and support staff to develop cohesive tutoring, peer mentoring, and academic support programs for student-athletes.
  • Student-Athlete Onboarding - Coordinate student success programming, specifically related to initial arrival to campus, and prepare various reports to be easily and quickly understood.
  • Recruiting - Aid in the student-athlete recruitment process, requiring a high level of skill in customer service, presentations, marketing of SJSU, and creating a team-oriented environment for students and their families.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to Acquire Knowledge - Familiarity with organizational procedures and activities of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the campus as a whole.
  • Analytical Skills - Ability to analyze data accurately and adopt effective course of action.
  • Communication Skills - Demonstrated ability for clear written and oral communication.
  • NCAA Legislation - Knowledge of NCAA legislation, rules, and regulations, mainly as they apply to academic support.
  • Student Development - Demonstrated ability to create student development and study skill programming.
  • Teamwork - Ability to work as a team collaboratively.
  • Higher Education Knowledge - General working knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of Division I higher education and academic support.
  • Cultural Competence - Demonstrated ability to create programs that are responsive to a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Individual and Group Behavior - Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
  • Academic Planning - Demonstrated ability to organize and evaluate academic plans.
  • Technology Platforms - Knowledge and understanding of the various technology platforms used in the University's online, technology-based learning environments.
Required Qualifications
  • Education - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Experience - Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree - Master's degree and/or teaching credential.
  • IEP Implementation - Experience with IEP implementation.
  • Recruitment Experience - Experience participating in recruitment of student-athletes.
  • Academic Support Experience - 1 year of experience in academic support in a university with NCAA D-I student-athletes.
