Senior Academic Advisor

The Senior Academic Advisor will play a pivotal role in supporting the academic success of upper-division students at San José State University. This position requires a strong understanding of academic requirements and procedures, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement a student-centered approach to academic advising, focusing on asset-based and strengths-based strategies to support student success.
- Monitor student progress through the use of early support systems, such as EAB Navigate, and implement timely interventions to address student needs.
- Assist students in navigating university and college processes, including letters and petitions, schedule changes, and academic notice.
- Introduce students to academic planning tools, such as MyPlanner and Roadmap, and campus resources to support their academic goals.
- Collaborate with students to create educational goals and interpret policies and procedures related to their goals.
- Develop and implement a student communication plan that aligns with university policies and deadlines.
- Take a lead role in designing and implementing programming efforts to support students' transition to SJSU, focusing on skills and behaviors that facilitate academic success.
- Basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing/connecting with students for effective holistic academic advising.
- Excellent customer-service skills and ability to establish trust and rapport with students.
- Effective use of PeopleSoft and EAB Navigate, as well as software applications such as Microsoft Suite and Google Suite.
- Knowledge of academic disciplines, coursework, and requirements for the appropriate academic college(s).
- Strong advising/counseling skills, including active listening and problem-solving abilities.
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
- Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
- A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
- Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Student Affairs, or related area.
- Equivalent of 3 years progressively professional student services work experience.
- Experience working in an advising office/center, preferably a high volume and fast-paced work environment.
- Experience working with students, staff, faculty, and administrators from a diverse background.
Classification: Student Services Professional III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,276/month - $5,797/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,276/month - $7,517/month
San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
