Deputy Director of Public Works and City Engineer

This is a unique opportunity to lead the engineering department in the charming city of Port Townsend, Washington. As the Deputy Public Works Director/City Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and implementing public works projects and ensuring the stewardship of the city's infrastructure. Your expertise in civil engineering principles and practices will be essential in preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for various projects.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement public works projects, including infrastructure planning and maintenance
- Supervise engineering division staff and provide guidance on civil engineering principles and practices
- Prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for various projects, including design, construction, and maintenance
- Collaborate with other city departments to ensure effective project delivery
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards
- Licensed engineer in the State of Washington or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Graduation from college with a degree in civil engineering or closely related field
- A minimum of 6 years of experience as a practicing licensed engineer, 4 years of which is in a management role
- 2 years of experience working in a municipal engineering environment
- Valid Washington State Driver's license
- Master of Science Degree in a related field
- 10 years of experience practicing as a licensed engineer, 6 of which is in a management role and municipal engineering position or as a consultant for governmental agencies
This position requires working in an office environment with occasional outdoor work in various weather conditions. The employee must be able to work at a desk for extended periods, attend meetings, and perform field investigations, inspections, and observations of construction. Remote work may be allowed per City policy and approval of the supervisor.
