Position Overview:

Michigan State University (MSU) and Lyman Briggs College (LBC) are dedicated to fostering a vibrant research and educational atmosphere where individuals from diverse backgrounds can pursue academic objectives with mutual respect and collaborative inquiry. Established in 1967, LBC is a dynamic residential STEM college that emphasizes the exploration of science within its social, historical, and humanistic contexts.

This posting is intended for qualified candidates to serve as instructors for introductory chemistry courses. Positions may be available on a part-time or full-time basis, and the need for instructors may vary by semester. Applications will be reviewed continuously as necessary.


Teaching Responsibilities:

The curriculum at LBC integrates innovative, student-centered science pedagogy with an interdisciplinary approach that examines the sciences alongside their societal implications. We prioritize teaching methodologies that incorporate research-informed best practices, including interactive engagement and peer-learning strategies.

Our general chemistry courses consist of a two-course sequence, with laboratory classes running concurrently yet functioning as independent courses. Instructional methods may include both flipped and traditional approaches, encouraging students to participate actively in group work during class sessions. Laboratory courses involve multi-week, student-driven experiments, supported by Undergraduate Learning Assistants who work under the guidance of course instructors.

As we are seeking candidates for a pool of potential instructors, specific course needs will fluctuate from semester to semester.

Qualifications:

Required: Doctorate in chemistry, chemistry education, or a closely related field. A Master's degree is required for Instructor rank, while a Doctorate is necessary for Assistant Professor rank, along with relevant teaching experience.

Preferred: Experience teaching chemistry in higher education; PhD in a relevant field; experience supervising or mentoring undergraduate students; collaborative instructional experience; and serving as the instructor of record for classes.

Department Overview:

The LBC curriculum merges natural sciences and mathematics with the history, philosophy, sociology, and communication of the sciences. With approximately 2,000 students, LBC is committed to fostering an inclusive environment, with a significant percentage of women and Honors College members among its student body. Faculty engage closely with students in small class settings and collaborate with student groups focused on inclusivity and women in science.
