Position Overview:

The Youth Shelter Support Specialist plays a crucial role in providing assistance at the Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter. This position is responsible for executing duties in alignment with the policies and procedures set forth by the Agency and Program, as well as adhering to relevant Federal and State regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engages with clients both in-person and via the Crisis Hotline, delivering appropriate interventions, referrals, and support.
  • Offers crisis intervention with a composed and effective approach; provides individualized supportive counseling to clients.
  • Facilitates connections for clients with necessary resources, both within the organization and externally.
  • Assists clients in activities aimed at fulfilling their needs and achieving their goals.
  • Collects essential information for shelter entry assessments; coordinates services for potential entries, including arranging safe pick-up locations and transportation.
  • Maintains the safety and security of the shelter and its residents at all times.
  • Serves as a positive role model; aids youth in developing self-help skills and provides case management services.
  • Assists with meal preparation, shelter upkeep, and the organization and documentation of donations; leads household meetings as assigned.
  • Provides transportation support as necessary.
  • Accurately enters data into databases in a timely manner, assisting with the tracking and compilation of statistics related to program activities and outcomes.
  • Participates in outreach and awareness initiatives as required.
  • Communicates effectively with the Program Manager regarding client activities, concerns, and interactions.
  • Ensures a smooth transition of information to incoming shifts when staffing the Youth Shelter.
  • Facilitates household activities within the shelter, fostering a welcoming, home-like atmosphere.
  • Supports the Homeless Program as needed based on demand.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Exhibits sound judgment and maintains strict confidentiality regarding agency, program, and client information.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of regulations, services, rights, and responsibilities pertaining to the populations served.
  • Obtains and maintains all necessary certifications and training within designated timeframes; attends required internal and external meetings and training sessions.
  • Possesses a valid NYS Driver's license with a driving record that complies with policy, along with access to a properly insured and reliable vehicle for regular travel and client transportation.
  • Holds a High School Diploma or GED and has at least 12 months of relevant experience in human services or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
