The Infection Control Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the Director of Infection Prevention and is a key member of the healthcare team in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This position is responsible for aiding in the organization, assessment, and enhancement of the Infection Prevention Program's quality and effectiveness. The Coordinator conducts surveillance for healthcare-associated infections and significant epidemiological events, utilizing established criteria and definitions. They establish performance indicators, identify trends, and collaborate with the Director of Infection Prevention and the hospital's Infectious Disease Physician to implement control measures. This role also serves as an educational resource for all staff regarding infection prevention and control practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Collaborates in executing a comprehensive plan to prevent healthcare-associated infections and communicable disease exposure among visitors and staff, continuously evaluating and adjusting the program as necessary.

2. Implements infection control measures in line with the guidelines from CDC, OSHA, CMS, DNV, and state health departments.

3. Analyzes routine surveillance data across the organization, presenting findings to relevant committees and clinical groups, while identifying health issues impacting patient care.

4. Works with the Employee Health Program to monitor staff exposures to blood, body fluids, and communicable diseases.

5. Oversees the surveillance of nosocomial infections and those occurring in outpatient settings, ensuring accurate reporting and record-keeping.

6. Engages with various departments to screen and admit patients suspected of having infectious diseases.

7. Aids in the development and delivery of educational programs on infection prevention and control, equipping staff with the necessary knowledge to comply with professional standards.

8. Investigates significant healthcare-associated infections, including CLABSIs, VAE, CAUTI, and others, to monitor and analyze incidence rates.

9. Supports the monitoring of emerging communicable diseases and high-threat infections.

10. Upholds system-wide measures to prevent the transmission of infections, managing committees focused on infection prevention projects.

11. Analyzes data to implement control measures for infection clusters and unusual occurrences.

12. Prepares departments for accreditation surveys related to infection control standards and leads surveyors when necessary.

13. Assists in the development and updating of infection prevention policies in collaboration with healthcare teams, ensuring compliance with guidelines.

14. Conducts literature reviews and prepares presentation materials as needed.

15. Maintains infection prevention databases and serves as a consultant on related issues across the organization.

16. Participates in problem-solving for infection control challenges as directed.

17. Conducts assessments and consultations with healthcare providers regarding patient infection prevention needs.

18. Inspects food preparation areas to ensure compliance with safety standards.

19. Develops risk assessments for construction and renovation projects, assisting with water management monitoring.

20. Collaborates with Environmental Services to ensure cleanliness across all departments.

21. Prepares reports on infection rates and findings for relevant committees and medical personnel.

22. Contributes to the annual Quality Improvement Plan for Infection Prevention and adheres to activity schedules.

23. Works with local, state, and federal agencies to report trends and communicable disease issues.

24. Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive matters and continues professional development in the field of Infection Prevention.

25. Holds a Bachelor's Degree in nursing, epidemiology, microbiology, public health, or a related field.

26. Requires a minimum of five years of acute care hospital experience and three years in infection control.

27. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is mandatory.
