Job Overview

The National Legal Director will play a pivotal role in advancing the ACLU's mission to protect and promote civil liberties.

About the Role

This senior leader will oversee litigation efforts nationwide, working closely with Deputy Legal Directors to manage issue-area dockets. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Supervising 150 litigators in the national office.
  2. Providing strategic leadership to another 400 litigators in state affiliates.
  3. Nurturing co-counsel relationships with 100 cooperating law firms.
  4. Overseeing the ACLU's U.S. Supreme Court docket.
  5. Leading national office litigation across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.
