About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Cheese Technical Manager to join our team at Land O'Lakes. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and leadership to ensure the production of high-quality cheese products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Optimize cheese production operations to meet quality and yield targets.
  • Develop and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality.
  • Manage product and process trials, ensuring accurate documentation and stakeholder involvement.
  • Contribute to site-wide continuous improvement initiatives, driving best practices and innovation.
  • Collaborate with engineering to analyze and troubleshoot problems, integrating new equipment and processes.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, including US, State, and global requirements.
  • Review vat recipes and finished product chemistry results to drive consistency and optimization.
  • Monitor and test fat, protein, salt, moisture, pH, and other chemistry components on finished products.
  • Work with plant operations to manage starter programs and HMI systems.
  • Follow in-process quality checks and adjust recipes as needed.
  • Responsible for strict adherence to GMPs and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Able to flex schedule to observe and support during specific cheese make style operations.
  • Conduct thorough investigations on out-of-spec product and microbiology results.
  • Partner with R&D to drive cheese make project improvements and monitor KPIs.
  • Support plant operations in customer complaint investigation and resolution.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, and develop two salaried direct reports in cheese making and process improvement.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor subordinate staff, conducting performance evaluations and recommending salary adjustments.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in Food Science, Science (Microbiology/Chemistry), Engineering, or associated discipline.
  • At least 7 years' experience in a technical, operations, or quality assurance function in a food manufacturing facility.
  • Cheese manufacturing experience and intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus, but not required.
  • Previous experience in a direct supervisory role highly preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification preferred – Green or Black Belt.
  • Prefer certified in HACCP and/or PCQI certified.
  • Understanding of industry best practices and standards to produce high-quality cheese.
  • Deep knowledge of how to build and optimize manufacturing processes to commercial goals while delivering quality and safety outcomes.
  • Certified and licensed as Cheesemaker and HTST operator.
  • Able to work effectively with plant manufacturing teams and serve as an ambassador to our customers regarding our process.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results through others, as well as the ability to operate independently as required.
  • Ability to work with a vision toward continuous improvement.
  • Not afraid to challenge status quo and present new approaches to drive business and operational improvement.
