Position Overview We are in search of a remarkable Head of Computational Biology to guide our talented team of computational biologists and data scientists. This role is crucial for driving some of our most ambitious projects, grounded in state-of-the-art statistical learning techniques and probabilistic modeling. You will be part of a dynamic team passionate about scientific innovation that has the potential to significantly impact patient outcomes, backed by substantial academic and professional accomplishments.

Key Responsibilities In essence, you will develop and lead a pioneering team dedicated to creating one of the world's most sophisticated analytical platforms for interpreting raw microbial data, addressing significant scientific breakthroughs and unmet medical needs.
  • Leadership & Strategy: Guide the computational biology and data science team towards achieving vital innovations aligned with Karius' strategic objectives. Cultivate a collaborative culture of excellence, continuous learning, and constructive feedback among team members. Ensure all projects have well-defined, measurable goals that align with the organization's long-term vision.
  • Research & Development: Oversee major method development initiatives, contributing to the creation of advanced mathematical frameworks, particularly in probabilistic modeling. Collaborate closely with medical experts to integrate domain knowledge, driving the advancement and refinement of analytical methodologies aimed at enhancing care for individuals affected by infectious diseases. Engage in thorough data-driven planning, risk assessment, and goal-setting to ensure successful execution of analytics projects.
  • Innovation & Execution: Spearhead the development and dissemination of methodological advancements that enhance our core product and broaden its application beyond infectious disease diagnostics. Exhibit exceptional proficiency in analyzing and interpreting microbial cell-free DNA signals, delivering precise, reliable, and actionable analytical outcomes.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Forge partnerships across various teams and departments within Karius, as well as with external stakeholders in both industry and academia. Actively engage with multiple departments, playing a pivotal role at the intersection of computational biology, machine learning, and domain-specific challenges. Effectively present findings, share knowledge, and communicate complex concepts to diverse stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding. Maintain a strong record of publications and presentations, showcasing Karius' groundbreaking work in esteemed scientific forums, while promoting and mentoring team members to exhibit leadership in the ongoing communication of our results.

Travel Requirements: Minimal travel may be necessary for conferences and similar events.
Physical Requirements: The role may involve extended periods of sitting and/or standing, with vision required for monitoring tasks in a typical office environment.
Qualifications * Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Statistics, Genetics, or a related discipline, with a proven track record of publications in reputable venues demonstrating significant method development capabilities.
* 7+ years of industry experience leading the development of cutting-edge computational and analytical methods aimed at deriving critical or novel insights from advanced molecular data, including next-generation sequencing data. Experience in deriving biological insights and understanding complex microbiome mechanisms is advantageous.
* 3+ years of experience managing a senior team of scientists and computational biologists with a strong academic background, as well as experience with complex multidisciplinary core teams. Proficiency in probabilistic modeling, machine learning algorithms, and other mathematical tools is essential.
* Excellent communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to present complex ideas clearly and effectively to leading scientific communities and industry leadership teams.
* Post-doctoral experience in statistics, computational biology, genetics, or a related field with a strong computational focus is a significant advantage, though not required.
