At CZI, we develop open-source software tools and harness the power of artificial intelligence to expedite biomedicine. Our commitment to funding scientific research globally aims to push the boundaries of knowledge. Additionally, we have established a network of institutes designed to conduct research that cannot be performed in traditional settings. Each of these components is vital to our long-term strategy.
CZI's scientific endeavors encompass grantmaking, open-source software development, and collaborative efforts with partner institutes within the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network, which includes multiple Biohubs and the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. We also collaborate with esteemed institutions like the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural & Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University. The Opportunity
As a Lead Research Scientist on the AI/ML team, you will utilize cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to address significant challenges in the life sciences that align with CZI's mission. The advent of modern high-throughput technologies has transformed the measurement of biological systems, resulting in extensive multimodal datasets that illuminate cellular mechanisms. You will collaborate with a team to leverage these large-scale biological datasets to develop models that enhance our comprehension of cellular functions.
Your role will involve close collaboration with scientists, computational biologists, and engineers at CZI, as well as partnerships with CZI grantees, institutes, and external laboratories. Your contributions will inspire and elevate the production and analysis of datasets by CZI teams and collaborators. Potential scientific focus areas include single-cell biology, spatial biology, imaging, genomics, genetics, proteomics, and more. You will be committed to Open Science and actively engage with the global scientific community in AI and computational biology.
What You'll Do
- Design, implement, and maintain innovative machine-learning models that enhance our understanding of complex biological systems.
- Address critical life science challenges through the application of advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning methodologies.
- Develop scalable solutions for intricate scientific questions using large-scale datasets, particularly through machine learning techniques, predictive modeling, and statistical analysis to further our understanding of cellular structures and interactions.
- Contribute to the advancement of community standards for the dissemination, presentation, and evaluation of computational methods addressing core scientific issues.
- Engage with the scientific community by publishing research papers, blog posts, open-source code, and participating in conferences focused on machine learning and life sciences.
- Work with diverse biological data types, including multi-omics data, cellular and tissue images, human specimen data, and cryoET tomography.
What You'll Bring
- A passion for working in a collaborative, cross-functional environment with a diverse team engaged in cutting-edge cell biology research driven by data.
- A PhD or Master's degree in computer science (with a focus on machine learning and data analytics), computational biology, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience, along with 5-8 years of experience in developing and applying machine learning techniques.
- Proven experience in building and training AI/ML models, particularly in addressing biological challenges and developing deep learning methodologies.
- Technical proficiency in AI, machine learning, data integration, or computer science applied to large-scale datasets.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A demonstrated record of relevant research publications, preprints, or software contributions.
- A strong interest in transforming scientific inquiries into reproducible, rigorously engineered systems based on quantitative assessment.
- A commitment to open science and a desire to contribute to the evolution of digital biology.
